St. Lucia is located on the warm Indian Ocean and the unique St Lucia estuary in the KwaZulu Natal province. The village is a kind of resort located at the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and this special reserve where many hippos and crocodiles live. St. Lucia used to be a real fishing village, but nowadays it is all about tourism, where fishing still plays an important role.
Due to the tropical climate you can go to St. Lucia all year round. It has miles of beaches where you can sunbathe and where you can swim all year round in the warm waves of the Indian Ocean, something the dolphins also love. You can go canoeing, scuba diving, horse riding, boating, snorkeling, whale watching in season (from May to December), or take a boat cruise looking for hippos and crocodiles.
Just before the entrance of the iSimangaliso Wetland park is the St. Lucia Crocodile Center. This was established to guarantee the conservation of the Nile crocodiles. In addition to the Nile crocodile, there are a number of other types of crocodiles and various snakes. Information is given, there is an exhibition, a souvenir shop and a restaurant.
In St. Lucia there are several small (souvenir) shops, (fish) restaurants and shops where fishing and / or surfing equipment is sold. You will also find stalls and fresh local produce here.
St. Lucia is a wonderful place for a great holiday, you can walk safely in the village but beware, especially when it is dark, because hippos also like to stay in the streets of the village!
And with Hluhluwe Imfolozi NP, Sodwana Bay and Cultural Zulu Villages ‘Just around the Corner’ it is versatile and has everything you could wish for on a South Africa vacation.
