Diving in Sodwana Bay
Sodwana Bay is one of the top 10 dive sites in the world, and was a favorite of Jacques Cousteau. Visibility is rarely less than 15 meters, and the water temperature is between 19 and 24 ° C. The 50 km reef complex has around 95 species of hard and soft coral. The beautiful overhanging rocks and steep walls make it a true underwater paradise. In addition, you will find more than 1200 species of fish, many shark species such as Bull, Tiger, Hammerhead, Fox Shark, Copper, Raggies and Black Tip Sharks, but also dolphins, whale sharks and turtles.
You can also find the 360 million year old living fossil at a depth of ± 100 m: the Coelacanth. It was thought that this fish was extinct, but in 2000 a whole colony was found. You do need a TEC certificate for this.
Diving in Umkomaas
The reefs between Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks are known as one of the best places in the world where you can safely dive without a cage with different types of sharks, such as Tiger sharks, Zambezi sharks (also known as Bull Sharks), Hammer sharks, Black tip sharks and Sand tiger sharks (Raggies ). There are also two beautiful wrecks; the ‘Produce’ and the ‘Nebo’. These are full of life and if you pay attention you can also find some pottery on the sandy bottom here and there.
