Zambia

The republic of Zambia is surrounded by a large number of other African countries: Congo, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Angola, Namibia and Botswana (only a few tens of meters). The name Zambia is derived from the Zambezi River that starts in the northwest of the country and forms the border in the south. The country is 752,000 km2 in size, which corresponds to the area of France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Switzerland combined.

The average altitude is between 1060 and 1363 meters above sea level and this makes the climate much more pleasant than in most other tropical countries. When looking at the weather, there are three periods: cool and dry from May to August, warm and dry from September to November and hot and wet from December to April. The maximum temperature in the winter months is between 15 and 27 degrees, in the morning and evening it is on average between 6 and 10 degrees. In the summer the temperature during the day rises from 27 to 35 degrees, thunderstorms occur regularly in the evening or during the day after which the sun breaks through again.
Zambia is known to many people only because of the Victoria Falls at Livingstone. Here the Zambezi River provides a breathtaking spectacle of falling water and rising water vapor.

Zambia has a number of national parks where you can see wild animals and beautiful birds. The South Luangwa National Park is one of the best game reserves in the world. In this park you can make a safari yourself or with a guide, animals you can encounter include: elephant, hippo, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, lion and leopard. The Kafue National Park is the largest with an area of 256 square kilometers along the Kafue River. Lions, cheetahs, leopards, wild dogs and no fewer than 21 different types of antelope live here.

Lower Zambezi National Park is particularly popular because boat and canoe trips can be made here for wildlife spotting (April – November). Along the river you can see elephants, buffalo, hippos, kudus, zebras, monkeys and antelopes, but there are also lions and leopards living in this park.

You can buy a (tourist) visa at the border with US Dollars or Kwacha. When you drive a car or motorhome in Zambia, you need an international driver’s license. When you enter Zambia with a rental car from another country, you also need a Temporary Import Permit and proof that you can use the car (temporarily).

Useful information:

  • The currency of Zambia is the Kwacha, but most major hotels and restaurants also accept credit cards and with most ATMs you can withdraw money with a visa card.
  • The official language is English, but there are also 7 languages that have been given official status (out of the 70 languages / dialects that are spoken)!
  • In order to visit Zambia by car, you need to apply for car documents prior to departure. Some car and camper rental companies impose strict restrictions on the area to be visited in Zambia. Ask our travel consultants about the 4 × 4 cars or campers that are suitable for your travel route!
