Ballito
Ballito is a 30-minute drive north of Durban on the so-called Dolphin Coast in Kwazulu Natal province. Bottlenose dolphins are regularly seen off the coast of Ballito. The dolphins love the clear and shallow water and come close to the shoreline for food. Every year whales also pass by when they are on their way to Mozambique where they spend the summer months.
Ballito has a coastline of about 2.5 km and has clean and safe beaches. The main beach is Willard Beach and has the ‘blue flag’ status, there are shark nets and lifeguards and a fully equipped first aid post. Many surfers and bodyboarders also use this beach and competitions are regularly organized. The water of the Indian Ocean can actually be called warm throughout the year.
Those who want to fish in the waters here need a fishing license that can be obtained at a local post office. This does not give you the right to catch mussels, lobster and oysters, you need a permit from the Marine Permit Office in Durban.
