Phalaborwa

Located in the northeastern part of South Africa, in the province of Limpopo, you will find Phalaborwa (also known as Ba-Palaborwa). It is part of the Mopane district and is one of the access roads to the world famous Kruger Park. In addition, it is also the ideal place for transit to the border parks of Mozambique, which are a 2-hour drive away.

About 2000 years ago a volcanic eruption took place, exposing all kinds of minerals and metals from the earth such as copper, gold, iron and zirconium. As a result, numerous clay kilns can be found in this area where the extracted metals were melted down. Until today it is still a flourishing mining town and the mine has now become a unique tourist attraction.

The name Phalaborwa was given by the Sotho tribe (who came from the south) and means “Better than the South”. It is a place with a wonderful climate, where it never really gets cold and where the winters are mild and the summers are warm.

Phalaborwa is a place surrounded by game reserves and lodges. Where the Ga-Selati and Olifants rivers come together, game reserves and wildlife are never more than half an hour away. It is a beautiful place for unforgettable memories, in short an ideal place to discover the beautiful ‘Lowveld’

To see wildlife, there are various options. Get out at sunrise or at sunset. Book a very popular ‘bushbraai’ or take a boat safari on the Elephant River where you glide quietly over the water and the animal world passes you by.

Day trips you can make from here are to the Blyde River Canyon, the Three Rondavels, God’s window and the Bourke’s Luck potholes. Several Tzaneen fruit farms and the Hoedspruit game farms are also worth a visit.

The Hans Merensky Golf Estate is located on the outskirts of the village and as a golf enthusiast you certainly cannot ignore this!
Game Reserves that you can visit are the Balule Game Reserve where you can see the Big 5, the Hans Merensky game reserve, of course the Kruger National Park. You use the Pahalaborwa entrance gate to enter the Kruger Park, you can’t get closer!

Sefapane Lodge is an excellent accommodation in Phalaborwa.
