Clarens

Clarens is the ‘most beautiful little village’ in the Eastern Free State, if we may believe the villagers. Admittedly, it is beautifully situated at the foot of the Maluti Mountains, just outside of the Golden Gate National Park and the Kingdom of Lesotho.

The picturesque village is surrounded by the Rooiberge and lies at the foot of Mount Horeb. The village is not only famous for its multicolored sandstone formations that you can find everywhere in the stones used for the construction of the village houses. Clarens is also known for the number of artists who work here and sell their art in the small shops around the village square. A place where you can also relax in one of the cafes or on a terrace. Visit the local beer brewery to taste one of the Clarens beers, because local is tasty!

Johannesburg, Durban and Bloemfontein are a 3 to 4-hour drive away, which makes Clarens attractive as a nice trip or weekend away for the people from these cities!

Clarens is called the jewel of the Free State because it is rich in beauty, with an aura of freedom and tranquility around her. Willow trees and the colorful blossom of the fruit trees are beautiful in the spring, but the color palette in the fall may give artists even more inspiration. In this way Clarens continues to attract more and more artists, photographers and nature lovers.

The villagers here are proud of their good waters for trout fishing and the area is ideal for horse riding enthusiasts and of course there are beautiful hiking and hiking trails in this area! Going for a quiet 18-hole course on the Clarens golf and trout estate is also a possibility.

You can go see a game in the nearby area, look for the San rock murals or search for it in the Spiritual and visit one of South Africa’s most holy places; the Fertility Caves.

Adventurers will not be bored here either, as more and more adventurous outdoor activities are being undertaken. You can go ballooning with a view of the Maluti Mountains and take beautiful pictures. And quad biking, abseiling and wild water canoeing make a holiday here something unforgettable.
