An adventurous trip for the 40+ active and healthy traveler who loves the nature and wildlife of Africa. During this trip you will visit a variety of national parks in Botswana including the vast Makgadikgadi Pans, the water-rich Okavango Delta and wildlife parks such as Moremi, Chobe, Khama Rhino and the Tuli Block. You also cross the border for two days to Zimbabwe to view the huge Victoria Falls. During this trip you mainly sleep in (dome) tents with stretchers, but these are stored for you by the camp management. The guides also ensure that meals are prepared and the camp is tidy. So you only have to enjoy!
The travel schedule below is for travel in 2020. If you travel in 2019, this trip will count for 14 days (the first night in Johannesburg is not part of the travel program).
Get in the mood
From€ 1934/ per person
Zimbabwe, South Africa, Botswana
bed and breakfast, full board
Camping, 2 nights hotel
You stay 11 nights in double dome tents (stretcher, mattress, sleeping bag and pillow included). The camp management sets up the tents for you and prepares all meals, you do not have to do anything yourself. Two nights in a hotel in Victoria Falls on a bed and breakfast basis.
Minimum 4 and maximum 16 participants.
Extra activities are possible in some places (see day program)
You will be taken from the airport by bus to the hotel. Depending on your arrival time, you will have the opportunity to see something of Johannesburg today. For example, a visit to the Apartheid Museum, excursion with local guide to the township of Soweto or a city tour through Johannesburg. But just relaxing after a long flight is also a great idea. The hotel is part of Emperor’s Palace, an entertainment resort near the airport.
You are expected at the hotel reception at 18:00. Here you will meet the guide and your fellow travelers. You can now pay the local payment of 200 USD per person to the guide. This contribution is used to make cash payments during the trip (such as entrance fees to game reserves). After a short introduction and the opportunity to ask questions, you can dine at a restaurant. If you only arrive late in the evening, you will meet the tour group and the guide the next morning. In that case you can also choose to stay an extra night at the hotel before the journey starts.
Included: transfer from the airport to the hotel
Included: breakfast and dinner
Day distance: 600 km
Early birds can optionally participate in a game drive through the reserve where you spent the night. This game drive lasts two hours and is mainly focused on the search for white rhinos. These are the rhinos with a wide lower jaw / lip, the black rhino can be recognized by a more pointed lower lip. The name has nothing to do with the color of the rhino.
Included: breakfast, lunch, dinner
Day distance 520 km
Optional activity: morning game drive
The Khwai area is a pure and unspoilt area of great beauty. You will find a lot of vegetation here including palm trees that give coolness to numerous birds and there is a wide variety of wildlife. In the morning and afternoon you make game drives through this area. The camp is surrounded by nature and is therefore ‘basic’ with bush toilets and showers (tents, no permanent buildings).
Day distance day four: 150 km, largely through Moremi Game Reserve
After a final morning game drive, it’s time to leave this wild area behind. Around noon you will arrive in Maun again where supplies will be replenished for the Okavango Delta excursion that takes place tomorrow.
Optional: flight over the Okavango Delta
Day distance: 150 kilometers.
This morning you will leave Maun at 7:30 am to arrive at the mokoros (kind of canoes) one to two hours later, travel time depending on the water level. A mokoro poler is introduced to you and this is also your guide during this beautiful water excursion. The polers move the mokoros almost silently through the fairy-tale waterways. These local guides know this area well and they will take a walk with you and tell you more about the animals and plants in this area.
The Delta includes hippos, elephants and various types of antelopes and goats. The area is characterized by reed and papyrus fields and beautiful water lilies. Here you can really relax in nature and enjoy the silence. Guiding tourists is a source of income for the locals (you can tip at the end of the excursion). In the afternoon you will drive back to Maun.
The camp is stored along the banks of the Chobe River. This area is famous for its beautiful views, beautiful sunsets, abundance of birds and large groups of elephants, buffalo and hippos. Enjoy the view and relax during the relaxed boat trip on the Choberivier (on day nine). Hopefully during this cruise you will see elephants taking a bath in the river, hippos, crocodiles and more. Optionally and for your own account you can make a game drive in the morning with a guide in the Chobe National Park (costs around BWP 295 per person + park fees).
Included: breakfast, lunch, dinner and boat trip on the Choberivier.
Optional: morning game drive Chobe N.P.
Day distance: 600 km (day 8)
Only 90 kilometers from Kasane to Victoria Falls and with a bit of luck the border crossing also runs smoothly. You can enter the coming days yourself. The Victoria Falls are undoubtedly one of the most beautiful attractions in Africa. Go for a stroll around the markets to buy African souvenirs, visit the waterfalls and walk along this natural phenomenon (entrance fees not included). Or go for the adrenaline-raising activities that you can undertake here such as rafting, bungee jumping or a helicopter flight above the falls. Lunch and dinner for your own account. You can visit the restaurants in the village of Victoria Falls or the hotel restaurant.
Two nights at Sprayview Hotel (or equivalent) in a double room with en-suite bathroom. Swimming pool, bar, restaurant, wifi, laundry service and shuttle to the falls.
Day distance: 90 km
Time to say goodbye to the spectacular Victoria Falls and to cross the border again to Botswana where the camp near Nata is stored.
Day distance: 350 kilometers
Traveling southward today you will pass through the Tuli Block in the south-eastern corner of Botswana. The reserve borders South Africa in the south and Zimbabwe in the east. Tuli has a landscape that you will not find anywhere else in Botswana and also offers good opportunities for wildlife and birds. You will see a landscape consisting of basalt stones, hills of sandstone, a network of (mostly dry) river beds, green afforestation in wet places, open grasslands, swampy areas and huge Baobab and Mashatu trees.
Included: breakfast, lunch, dinner, morning bush walk and afternoon game drive on day 14.
