Selfdrive to South Africa for those who want something different

Upon arrival at Johannesburg airport you will be met by a driver who will take you to your first overnight address: Safari Club (or similar). You stay here based on bed and breakfast. If you wish, you can also have dinner here. This must be indicated in advance when booking.

After breakfast, your rental car will be brought to your accommodation. We have selected a Category C from Europcar for this trip. If you prefer a different category, please let us know. The car is insured all inclusive. After receiving the car around 10 am you can start your tour.

You drive via the N3 to Harrismith and continue your route via the R74. After approximately 36km you turn right to your next accommodation: Montusi Mountain Lodge. You will stay here for two nights based on bed, breakfast and dinner.

There is a long journey of around 5 hours on the program today. After breakfast you drive back to the R74 and via Winterton you drive to the junction with the N3. Then take the N3 in a southerly direction to Mooirivier. Here you take the R622 in an easterly direction. In Greytown you take the R74 towards Kranskop and then the R66 to the fantastic private game reserve: Thula Thula Game Reserve.

Here you will stay in a luxury tent based on breakfast, lunch and dinner. You will also set off for a game drive at the end of the afternoon and you will have the opportunity to see elephants, buffalo, rhinos, leopards, giraffes, crocodiles and more. A unique experience in nature!

If you wish, you can visit the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve. This park is located in the heart of Zululand and was established in 1895 to protect the last white rhinos in Kwazulu Natal. The typical vegetation – dense green layers of vegetation and a hilly landscape – make this park special. You will spend the two nights in the Umlilo Lodge on a bed and breakfast basis.

If you have not done this yet, we advise you to make the two-hour boat cruise, the hippo and the St. Lucia Wetlands crocodile boat cruise. You hereby explore the St. Lucia Lake. This is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Africa. Here you will find thousands of flamingos, pelicans and other water birds. There are also around 1500 hippo crocodiles and 900 hippos. Here you will find the largest concentration of crocodiles and hippos in southern Africa.

You will stay one night in a double unit at the Rhino River Lodge, based on bed, breakfast, lunch and dinner and including an afternoon and a morning game drive.

You will stay two nights in Thonga Beach lodge based on bed, breakfast, lunch and dinner and including selected activities (guided walks, use of snorkeling equipment, kayaking, etc.).

The last part of the ride to Thonga Beach can only be reached by 4 x 4. You can park your car at Coastal Cashews. You will then be picked up there (at 12 noon or at 3 pm) and brought to your accommodation by open 4 x 4 vehicle. In itself a fantastic adventure !.

After breakfast, leave Amakhosi Game Reserve and head north on the R66 to Pongola. Then you drive via the N2 to the border with Eswatini (formerly Swaziland). From here you continue via MR9 and MR3 to Mbabane, where you can schedule a stop. Then continue via the MR1 to the Phophonyane Falls Eco lodge. You will stay here one night based on bed and breakfast.

Today you will be driving to South Africa again. You follow the R570 to Malelane and then the N4 to Hazyview and finally Phalaborwa. The cozy Sefapane Lodge is your home for the next two nights.

After your last days near Kruger Park, you will drive back to Johannesburg today (O.R. Tambo). Here you return your rental car and check in for your flight back to Amsterdam.
