Easy selfdrive trip through the Western Cape (budget)

Today you arrive in Cape Town

Stellenbosch is located in the middle of the Cape Winelands and in the summer you can see the grape bunches hanging here and the vineyards are green in color. If you have a bad weather day in the winter, there are also several museums to visit and of course you can taste delicious wines at one of the many estates. In every season, a visit to Uncle Samie’s shop and strolling through the historic city center of Stellenbosch is fun. You will see beautiful houses in Cape Holland style and the streets are lined with oak trees. There are cozy terraces and many different restaurants in the center.

Around Stellenbosch you can also find a number of nature reserves where you can walk. Visit for example the Jonkershoek nature reserve for a nice walk through the woods.

You stay one night at Stellenbosch Hotel based on bed and breakfast. This 3-star hotel is located in the center, so you can explore the village on foot from here or visit a restaurant.

Time to travel further and go deeper into the wine countries. Your next destination is only 32 kilometers away: Franschhoek. This place is called the ‘Food & Wine Capital of the Cape’ because you can find many prominent wine farms and restaurants here. This is also an excellent environment for a wine tasting or for culinary indulgence. Many restaurants require timely reservations, we are happy to do this for you free of charge!

Franschhoek has an interesting history in which the French Huguenots played an important role, you can learn more about this at the Huguenot Museum.

Two nights in  Plumwood Inn in a standard room based on bed and breakfast. This luxurious and attractive 4-star guesthouse is located in the center of Franschhoek and has a beautiful garden with swimming pool.

Today you continue your journey to the fruit-producing region Robertson. You drive a beautiful route along the Theewaterskloof Dam and the Brandvlei nature reserve, day distance about 120 kilometers. Wine is also produced in this area, but it is also known for the production of dried fruit, olives, roses and the brandy popular in South Africa (visit the Klipdrift distillery).

You will spend the night at Ballinderry The Robertson Guesthouse based on bed and breakfast. A beautiful 4-star accommodation surrounded by a relaxing garden with swimming pool. Take the time for the delicious and extensive breakfast.

Woke up early this morning for a game drive to once again look for members of the Big Five and other beautiful animals and birds together with the ranger. Upon your return to the camp, a well-deserved breakfast will be waiting for you. You must check out at 10:00 a.m. and drive to your next destination: Clanwilliam.

Today’s route is approximately 215 kilometers long and takes you past nature reserves and the Cederberg. The area around Clanwilliam is known for the production of rooibos tea, this is the only place where rooibos grow. You can go hiking or hiking in the Cederberg and there are ancient rock drawings of the bushmen.

You overnight in Saint du Barrys in a Garden Room based on bed and breakfast.

Today you will leave for the coast where you can optionally visit the village Lamberts Bay, an important processing center for lobster. You can also visit the Sandveld museum where you can learn more about the culture of this region. More than 150 different bird species live in huge numbers on the bird island off the coast (keep your nose shut because the birds stink properly!).

You drive along the coast to today’s final destination: Paternoster (day distance approximately 175 km). Paternoster is a picturesque traditional fishing village with a view of the Atlantic Ocean and the beautiful coastline. It is a place where you can relax and enjoy the natural beauty.

Today only a short drive to your next destination, 45 kilometers to Langebaan. Because you do not have to drive far, you have enough time to explore the beautiful nature around Langebaan today. The nature in the Langebaan lagoon is phenomenal, because of the tide in the lagoon you will find here numerous wading water birds. The lagoon, three kilometers wide and 30 kilometers long, has plenty of seagulls, but also flamingos and pelicans are happy to be guests. And it is seen as the largest breeding ground for black herons.

The  West Coast National Park is on the south side of the village. The area has a rich history and is also famous because the “footstep of Eve”, the oldest human footprint, is found here. But the enchanting beauty of the coastline and the flora and fauna make it a place for the true nature lover!

You spend the night at Windtown Lagoon Hotel, based on bed and breakfast.

This morning you can once again enjoy the beautiful nature around Langebaan and then continue your journey back inland. After approximately 135 kilometers you will arrive in Tulbagh, beautifully situated in the “Deserted Valley”. A valley where the Khoi and Bushmen stayed for thousands of years until the Dutch and Huguenots settled here from 1658. The time of the settlers can still be found everywhere, especially in the beautifully restored Cape Holland houses and Edwardian and Victorian monuments in the village. Take a historic walk through the village and go back in time. More than 30 houses here fall under the protection of monuments and all in one street.

Stay overnight at Cape Dutch Quarters in a self-catering unit based on accommodation.

Cape Town is not for nothing known as one of the world’s most beloved cities. This special city, also called the ‘Mothercity’, with the impressive Table Mountain in the background is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The city attracts many lovers of culture, theater and good food accompanied by good wine. In Cape Town there are many sights to see and excursions to book. Definitely worth a few days stay.
