Adventure Truck trip: ‘From North to South’
During this complete, varied and adventurous tour through South Africa all highlights are covered: safaris in the Kruger Park and Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve, the wine countries around Stellenbosch, the impressive Drakensberg and of course the bustling Cape Town with its famous Table Mountain. Experience South African hospitality, enjoy the famous Garden Route and relax on the coast. Also the beautiful Panorama route, the ostriches in Oudtshoorn, beaches of Durban, the green Tsitsikamma N.P. and a visit to Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) and Lesotho are included in this trip.
During this trip you can choose to stay in double domed tents or in double rooms with private bathroom. You will find more information in the itinerary. If you opt for the camping trip, you are expected to help with setting up the tents, packing the truck and preparing meals. A flexible attitude is required.

Day 1: Kruger National Park (D)
At 07:00 in the morning you will leave from Belvedere Estate lodge in Johannesburg to the province of Mpumalanga. In the afternoon you arrive at the Kruger National Park and from the moment you enter, you can start spotting wildlife! You have the option to participate in a Sundowner Drive, your guide can help you book this safari in the morning. (day distance ± 515 kilometers).

Wake up early so you can spend the whole day in the park looking for the Big Five! With an area of almost 20,000 km², the Kruger Park is the largest game park in South Africa. Your tour guide will take you all day to see as many of the 336 species of trees, 49 species of fish, 34 species of amphibians, 507 species of birds and 147 different mammals as possible. From the high adventure truck with its large windows you have a beautiful view of the landscape. Travelers who have booked the activity package will enter the park today with an open 4×4 safari vehicle. Also tonight you have the option to make an optional Sundowner game drive.

If you want to participate in the optional morning game walk, it is early again today. During a walk in the bush you see the park with very different eyes and there is more attention for the smaller animals, the footsteps of animals and plants. Of course you still have a chance to stand eye to eye with large game and the rangers also carry a weapon for security reasons.

Day 4: Eswatini – Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary (B, L, D)
After a cup of coffee with rusks (traditional South African delicacy to dip into your coffee), you head south through the Kruger Park. Along the way you can still spot members of the Big Five from the truck. Have your passport ready, because when you leave Kruger Park, it is only a short distance to the border of the kingdom of Eswatini (formerly Swaziland). Today’s destination is the Ezulwini Valley just outside the capital, Mbabane. You enter the Mlilwane Game Reserve and because there are no large predators here, you can explore the area on foot (day distance ± 380, of which about 150 km in Kruger NP).

Day 5: iSimangaliso Wetland Park (B, L, D)
This morning you can further explore the Ezulwini Valley, also called ‘Valley of Heaven’. In the morning you take a walk through the reserve. Other activities are also possible such as a morning game drive, mountain biking or a Swazi cultural tour. In the afternoon it’s time to leave Swaziland and travel south through Zululand, once the territory of the mighty King Shaka. In the evening you will be treated to a cultural experience where you will learn more about the Zulu traditions and their language (day distance ± 335 kilometers).

You have another day full of nature and wildlife ahead. This morning you will drive to the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve. Here a local guide takes you on a safari in 4×4 vehicles. The game reserve is the only park in the KwaZulu-Natal province that is run by the state. Thanks to a large-scale conservation project, the park has the largest population of white rhinos in the world, but you can also see the other members of the Big Five here. In the afternoon you take a boat cruise on the St. Lucia Estuary, part of the Greater St. Lucia Wetland park (nowadays iSimangaliso Wetland Park).

Day 7: Durban (B)
Today you will reach Durban, where you will stay in South Beach, on the boulevard. Durban has the largest port in South Africa and is known as a surfing destination. The largest group of Indians outside of India live in Durban and therefore you can enjoy the delicious authentic Indian cuisine. Today you have time to relax on the beautiful beaches of Durban on the warm Indian Ocean. Optionally you can visit the uShaka Marine World aquarium complex (day distance ± 240 kilometers).

Day 8: Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park (B, L, D)
You can take a beach walk in the morning or take a dip in the ocean and then it’s time to leave the beautiful beaches behind you and travel further inland to the Royal Natal National Park, part of the Drakensberg. This is South Africa’s highest mountain range with peaks of 3000 meters and more. You can go hiking and view rock paintings, among other things. Along the way, a stop is made in Howick to visit the waterfall and the place where Nelson Mandela was arrested before his 27-year prison sentence began (day distance ± 265 kilometers).

Day 9: Drakensberg (B, L, D)
On the second day in the Drakensberg you can take a walk / hike under the guidance of your guide with the possibility to visit San rock drawings en route with a local guide. Based on the wishes and physical condition of the group, it can be decided to offer different routes that you can choose from. Today’s main goal is for everyone to enjoy the beautiful surroundings at their own pace.

Today the journey begins with the drive of a beautiful mountain pass and a visit to a vulture restaurant where with a bit of luck you will see the big vultures. This is followed by a beautiful route through the Golden Gate Highlands National Park to the border with Lesotho (day distance ± 550 km and a border crossing).

This morning you take a walk in the mountains where you can enjoy the pure mountain air, the beautiful view and you visit a local village. Here you will become acquainted with the daily life of the residents. The Basotho people are known for their traditional hats, blankets and strong mountain ponies. These ponies are extremely well adapted to the mountainous area and you have the opportunity to make a ride on the back of a pony to experience this for yourself.

You leave the ‘Kingdom in the Sky’ and drive along the Orange River (also known as Gariep River) and through the Karoo, a dry semi-desert landscape. The journey ends today in the historic village of Graaff Reinet, the fourth oldest village in South Africa. You make a sundowner tour to the Valley of Desolation (in the South African winter months you visit this beautiful place tomorrow morning when the sun rises). This beautiful valley gives you a unique view over the fields and the small village. If time permits, you can take a walk in the village.

Day 13: Graaff Reinet – Addo Elephant National Park (B, L, D)
Today you continue your tour in a southerly direction to the Addo Elephant National Park: Addo is South Africa’s third largest national park and home to more than 600 African elephants! But you will also find the Cape buffalo, lion, black rhino and various antelopes here. You will visit this park tomorrow (day distance ± 153 kilometers).

This morning you have time to visit Port Elizabeth (optional). In the afternoon it’s time to look for the elephants and other animals in the Addo Elephant park! You go on the truck for a game drive through the park and because you will sit nice and high, you have a good view.

Day 15: Jeffreys Bay – Tsitsikamma N.P. (B, L, D)
You leave Addo and its elephants behind and drive along the coast towards the Tsitsikamma National Park. Tsitsikamma means ‘place of abundant water’ and the native forests and dramatic coastlines will not disappoint you! Along the way there will be a stop at Jeffrey’s Bay, a small place that is known for its excellent surfing possibilities and wonderful beaches (day distance ± 210 kilometers).

Adventurers take part in the Waterfall Trail, an intensive but beautiful hike! This route winds along the beautiful coastline and ends at the waterfall where you can take a refreshing dip. Would you prefer to take it a bit easier? Then use the hiking trail to the mouth of the Storms River where you can take beautiful photos of the rugged coastline. Optionally you can participate in the Treetop Canopy Tour where you can experience the park from the eyes of the many birds that live here.

Day 17: Garden Route (B, L)
Today the opportunity to visit some beautiful places along the Garden Route and to undertake optional activities. Today the truck drives a number of rounds along the sights so that you can choose how long you want to stay somewhere before you drive the truck to another location. The day starts with a visit to Nature’s Valley where you can take a walk or relax on the beautiful beach. The day ends on the beaches at the Keurbooms Lagoon, also a beautiful place. In the evening you and your fellow travel companions can go out for dinner (optional) and chat about the things you did that day.

Day 18: Oudtshoorn (B, D)
In the winter months (July-November) you can go out on the ocean with a boat to spot whales (optional). You can also choose to spend the morning on Plettenberg Bay beach or discover this holiday town on foot. Then you will drive through the Outeniqua Mountains to Oudtshoorn on Route 62. Oudtshoorn has the most sunny days in South Africa and is known as the ostrich capital, because of the ostrich farms. This afternoon you will visit such a farm and learn more about these animals, why they are bred and about life on a farm (day distance ± 150 kilometers).

After breakfast you first visit the beautiful and impressive Cango Caves! A guide will take you into the caves and you will learn all about the 4 km network of corridors and rooms of the Cango Caves. Then via a beautiful route through the Klein Karoo and the wine countries to Paarl. On the way there is a stop at Ronnie’s Sex Shop in Barrydale. In this store no sex items, but a bar for something to eat or drink. The inscription was officially ‘Ronnies shop’, but friends of owner Ronnie added ‘sex’ to it. Nowadays tourists from all over the world stop here for a drink and to take a photo (day distance ± 365 km).

Day 20: Cape Town (B)
After a quiet breakfast, your guide will take you to Stellenbosch where you will have time to discover this cozy place. There are many shops where you can buy the latest souvenirs or drink a glass of wine at one of the excellent restaurants. Then we drive to the center of Cape Town where you take an interesting tour with a local guide. There is also an opportunity to taste delicious Cape wines before your journey ends (day distance ± 80 km).
