Umphakatsi cultural excursion in Eswatini

General information

A visit to Eswatini is not complete without a visit to a traditional Swati village. Towards the border with the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary lies the Swati village of Umphakatsi that you can visit to learn more about the life of the Swati’s.

Umphakatsi is a special village since it is one of the few with a female Chief: Inkhosikati. The Swati greeting for the Inkhosikati is ‘Yebo Nkosi’. Interaction is appreciated so you can try to grind grain / corn, weave baskets of grass and participate in song and dance.

You will get a lot of explanation about the Swati culture and customs and also learn how utensils are made and what their siSwati name is. You will see how the women weave mats from which the characteristic Beehive huts are made.
