Shark Cage Diving in Kleinbaai

This unique opportunity during your holiday in South Africa starts with breakfast or lunch (depending on your departure time) at the Great White House in Kleinbaai (+/- 40 km from Hermanus). You specify the size for your wet suit and this is laid out for you, the wet suit is always clean and dry! You will receive instructions on safety on the boat and during the cage dive and interesting information will be given about sharks.

There you walk to the boat: Slashfin, about 200 meters away. It is a 20 minute boat ride to Dyer island and then you drop anchor and the cage is lowered into the water. Depending on the number of participants and the (weather) conditions, you will stay there for 1 to 2 hours. When you are not in the cage to come face to face with the sharks from the water, you can search for sharks and other marine animals from the (upper) deck (for example, whales, seals and dolphins). Drinks and small snacks are available on board. There are changing rooms where you can change clothes and toilets on board. When the weather permits, you will sail through the infamous ‘Shark Alley’ and then return to the Great White House where you can chat about this exciting experience while enjoying a cup of soup and sandwiches.

The port where the boat leaves is about a half-hour drive from Hermanus in Kleinbaai, from Cape Town it is about a 2-hour drive. A transfer from and to Kleinbaai is possible: the costs for a return transfer from Cape Town are approx. € 40 pp (min. 4 people) and from Hermanus approx. € 28 pp Note: if you book a transfer from Cape Town and you participate in the excursion early in the morning, then the time that you will be picked up will be very early in the morning.

You will be informed of the exact departure time one day prior to your shark cage dive, which depends on, among other things, the weather and therefore difficult to record in advance. Normally the times for the excursion are: 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

What should you bring? Swimwear, warm clothing / windbreaker (even in summer it can be cold on the water), hat / cap, sunscreen, camera.

This tour is carried out by the expert and passionate team of Marine Dynamics. Marine Dynamics, together with Dyer Island Cruises, is involved in various projects and studies related to the Marine Big Five: penguins, whales, dolphins, seals and sharks. They are concerned with protecting these animals, shelter and rehabilitation where necessary and providing information about responsible use of these and other marine animals and their living environment. Not only do you get information as a visitor, but the locals are also informed.

Marine biologists have long been involved in mapping the quantity and behavior of great white sharks. All this information is used to protect this endangered shark species. Other projects include the application of artificial nests for penguins in areas where the natural nesting material has been removed by humans. Without good nests the penguins cannot properly protect their eggs and little ones and the chances are that eggs will be eaten by other birds. Marine Dynamics has a bird rescue and rehabilitation center where injured animals can recuperate and then be released again. They also help whales, sharks, seals and other animals that have washed ashore or are entangled in fishing nets.

Despite the great experience of the team, it is possible that you will not see any sharks during your trip, after all they are still wild animals! If this happens, you will receive 25% of the costs of this day trip back.
