Excursion: the best of Lesotho

This first day has a full program right away, which is why you leave at 8 a.m from Underberg. With a 4×4 you climb the Sani Pass to Lesotho. While the guides drives up the winding rigged mountain pass, you can enjoy the fantastic view. You make a stop at Sani Mountain Lodge for a cup of coffee or tea and then continue on to a Basotho village where you can taste homemade bread and beer (optional).

Take a look at Thabana Nteltyana, the highest point in Lesotho with a height of no less than 3482 meters Via the Sehonghong valley, Mokhotlong and the Letseng diamond mine you travel to Oxbow Lodge and from there to Butha Butha where you will spend the night. Dinner is also served here and if time permits, visits the caves with bushman paintings (otherwise you do this the next day).

After breakfast you leave for an interesting place where you can see dinosaur footprints. You can also take a look at the market where all kinds of handmade items are sold, nice as souvenir! The trip continues through the Bokong nature reserve to today’s final destination, Katse Dam. If you arrive at the dam before 14:00, you have the option to participate in a tour. If you arrive late, you can still view the dam wall from the outside.

After an early breakfast you leave the Katse Dam and the guide takes you along a beautiful route through an unspoilt and remote part of Lesotho. Here you can see how people in the countryside live with very little, as if you go back in time.

After a last stop at the highest pub in Africa the return journey via the Sani Pass begins. You will probably be back in Underberg around 5 pm.

Because Lesotho is at a high altitude (the lowest point in the country is 1400 meters above sea level), it is generally cold here and there is a chance of snow in the winter months. The Basotho population uses blankets as a shawl to stay warm in the winter. So bring warm clothing and closed shoes.

You drive a lot on unpaved and winding roads. If necessary, bring something against motion sickness.
