In this reserve you can come face to face with giant elephants during game drives, but also rhinos, hippos, buffalo, giraffes, zebras and, if you’re lucky, even leopards.

Two nights at Mabula Game Lodge in a standard room (suite also possible), including meals and two game drives per day. There is a nice swimming pool and even a spa.

Adjacent to the Kololo Game Reserve is the Welgevonden Game Reserve. The Big Five (elephant, buffalo, lion, rhino, leopard) lives within this reserve. During your stay at Kololo you can also make game drives in this reserve with an open safari vehicle and an expert guide.

You can opt for a safari activity per night that you stay at Kololo. Because you stay here for three nights, you can choose an activity from this list three times:

* Kololo game-drive (morning  or afternoon);
* Kololo bush walk or a seasonal night drive in Kololo. Other activities are possible for a fee, ask for availability when you check in:
* Welgevonden game drive for 6 hours (R750 pp);
* Welgevonden bush walk (R950 pp);
* horse riding safari (R700 pp) or;
* Kids safari (R250 pp).

After you have checked out, the journey continues. Via Thabazimbi and Mogwasi you drive to the Pilanesberg National Park. The distance is 150 kilometers and this ride will take around 2 hours and 15 minutes. Along the way you can stop again to do some shopping for the coming days.

You spend three nights at Manyane Resort which is located in the Pilanesberg game reserve. Overnight stay in a double chalet (small fridge and pressure cooker available), based on bed and breakfast. You can use the restaurant at this resort for other meals if desired. There is a swimming pool and a playground at this property.

If you get up early for breakfast, you can take a last ride through the park today looking for the Big Five.

Two nights at Clarens Retreat in a self catering unit. You can do your shopping and take care of your breakfast, lunch and dinner yourself or use the restaurants within walking distance. There is a kitchen with a 2-burner gas cooker, fridge, cooker and microwave.

Today you can visit the Golden Gate Highlands National Park, which is only 20 kilometers from Clarens. Here you can enjoy the beautiful landscape with sandstone rock formations as you drive through the park, but it is more fun to take a walk / hike. There is one road through the park and when you come from Clarens you will soon see the Glen Reenen Rest Camp and hotel.

There is plenty to do in this park, but if you travel in the South African winter then it can be cold here. It is even possible that snow falls and this creates beautiful pictures. A number of hiking / hiking tours start from Glen Reenen Rest Camp (if desired, you can also spend the night here).

The Mushroom Rock Hike is an easy route of about an hour. As you walk through the park, you have the chance to see different types of antelopes, zebras, smaller game and of course birds. At this rest camp there is also a natural swimming pool and picnic areas. If you continue through the park you will get a turn to the Basotho Cultural Village. Here you will learn more about the lifestyle of the Basotho people.

This park is part of the northern Drakensberg and is particularly known for its impressive Amphitheater; a rock face of no less than 5 km long with a height of 500 meters. The River Tugela falls here from the edge of the Amphitheater and there are hiking trails that lead you to this point. You can buy hiking maps at the information center and the routes vary in difficulty and length.

You can cool off on a warm day in the rivers in the park. Summer hiking is best done in the morning. Always bring enough water, think about sun protection and also bring a warm vest if you are going to make a longer trip.

Many rock paintings of the San have also been discovered in this area. You can view the petroglyphs under the guidance of a local guide. Or perhaps you will see these centuries-old works of art yourself while hiking.

All good things come to an end … Unfortunately, you are returning to Johannesburg Airport today to return your rental car. Today you are mostly driving on the N3 highway and you can stop in Harrismith for lunch. The total distance to the OR Tambo airport is 342 kilometers. If there are no traffic jams, this journey will take around four hours. If you are flying with KLM, your flight will not leave until late in the evening and you can have a bite to eat at the airport and perhaps buy some souvenirs.
