General information

Malawi is becoming an increasingly popular destination. The country is surrounded by Zambia, Mozambique and Tanzania. Unlike its neighboring countries, apart from elephants, zebras, giraffes and antelope species, you will not find much large game here. But surprisingly, Malawi is a very good beach destination! A large part of the country consists of the huge Lake Malawi, a lake that is approximately 560 km long and no less than 75 km wide. There are beautiful beaches here and a fascinating underwater world.About 1,000 different species of fish live here, making it a good place for diving and snorkeling.

During this tour you will be introduced to the beautiful, and still relatively unspoilt, country. You see different landscapes, take walks, relax on the beach and make a beautiful kayak safari where you spend the night on an island! All in all a wonderful introduction to Malawi and its residents.

The travel schedule as mentioned below is based on the 2019 program. If you travel in 2018, the program may differ slightly.

B = Breakfast, L = lunch and D = dinner.

Day 1: Dzalanyama Forest Reserve (D)
You will be picked up at the airport and drive to the Dzalanyama Forest Reserve in approximately two hours. This reserve is located about 40 km south-west of Lilongwe and consists of a number of steep hills and woodland. The ideal place for walking and bird watching.

After you have checked in at the lodge, you have the rest of the afternoon at your leisure and you can take an orientation walk. In the evening you meet the rest of the group and enjoy dinner together.

Accommodation: Forestry House

Day 2-3: Game Haven (B, L, D)

After breakfast you will drive a beautiful route through Malawi, along the border with Mozambique and through the city of Blantyre, before you arrive at your overnight stay for the next two nights. Along the way you make a number of interesting stops! You will visit petroglyphs, viewpoints from where you have a fantastic view of Lake Malawi, and you will visit a market stall along the way.

Game Haven is a serene and beautiful game park (one of the few in Malawi) where you can spot kudu, roan and sable antelopes, zebras and giraffes. But many special birds also live here! After arrival at your lodge you can relax by the swimming pool and enjoy the soothing sound of the waterfall on the background. Enjoy a drink in the bar during the sunset.

On day three you set off to explore the area. The highlight of the day is a walking tour to the Satemwa Tea Estate. This beautiful tea plantation produces white, black, gold and flavored tea. After tasting the tea, head to the luxurious Huntingdon House for a fantastic lunch. Then there is a hike at Thyolo Mountain. You return in the afternoon and have the rest of the day at your leisure.

Accommodation: Game Haven

Day 4-5: Lake Malawi (day 4: B, L, D, day 5: B, D)
Today you drive to Cape Maclear on Lake Malawi. Along the way you stop at Zomba and visit a market. You then drive through the historic town of Mangochi to Lake Malawi where you will arrive mid-afternoon. Enjoy a sundowner on the beach this afternoon!

Day 5

you have the entire day for free spending. The sporty types can practice one of the non-motorized water sports or go snorkeling and even diving (both optional). Don’t you feel like it? Then you can relax on the beautiful beach or visit a local pub.
Accommodation: Cape Maclear Lodge or Chembe Eagles Nest or Annie’s Lodge

Day 6: Kayak Safari (B, L, D)
Today there is an active adventure on the program; you are going to kayak! After breakfast you will be brought to the Kayak Africa Base Camp and a short briefing will be given about the trip. No worries, you don’t need any experience. You sail to the island in stable 2-person kayaks. Do you really not want to kayak, that is no problem! Then you will be brought to the island by motorboat. Once there, a well-deserved lunch follows and the rest of the day you can recover from the trip and explore the island. You spend the night on the island.

Accommodation: Island camp (in a chalet with its own bathroom or in a dome tent with a shared bathroom)

Day 7 Kuti wildlife Reserve (B, L,D)
After breakfast you will paddle back to the mainland. You then drive to Mua Mission in about 2.5 hours: a KuNgoni Center of Culture & Art. You can learn more about the history and culture of Malawi at the Chamare Museum. You will also visit the Carving Center, where you can admire and buy carvings and the library. The museum has an exhibition about the Chewa, Ngoni and Yao cultures. You can also visit a community and admire the arts & crafts center. You then continue to Kuti Wildlife Reserve for the night. You will find different types of landscapes here such as swamps, forests and grassland. This makes this a good habitat for animals such as zebras and impalas. In the afternoon you can choose from a game drive, a walk or a mountain bike tour.

Accommodation: Kuti Wildlife Reserve Chalets

Day 8: Nkhotakota Reserve (B, L, D)
Early in the morning you can again choose from a game drive, a walk or a mountain bike tour. You return to the lodge and enjoy your breakfast. Then you drive to the Nkhotakota Reserve. This is one of the largest reserves in Malawi and is located near Lake Malawi. No fewer than 130 different bird species live here and the area is still a pure wilderness. You can go hiking, fishing and climbing here.
You will arrive at your lodge or camp around lunchtime. After lunch you take a walk.

Accommodation: Bua River Lodge or Kachenga Bush Camp

Day 9-10: Lake Malawi (Day 9: B, L, D, day 10: B, D)
Those who want can take a walk before breakfast. After breakfast you will leave for Chintheche, on the northern shores of Lake Malawi. Your lodge is located on a private bay. That in combination with the beautiful garden makes this a real ‘retreat to paradise’.

You can undertake activities here such as swimming, snorkeling, fishing, kayaking and simply admiring and absorbing the lake. During your stay you will visit a local village and museum and taste the local food. Optionally you can go horse riding and / or diving here.

Accommodation: Makuzi Beach Lodge

Day 11-13: Nylka Plateau (B, L, D)
An early departure today. You drive through Mzuzu, the third largest city in Malawi, to the Nylka Plateau. It is a long drive today, so on the way you stop for a picnic lunch. You will then arrive at your destination at the end of the afternoon.

On both days 12 and 13, game drives are on the program in the morning and in the afternoon. Optionally you can make an exciting game drive in the dark on the spot in the evening. In the dark you see a completely different world, animals that you do not see during the day and sounds that you do not hear during the day.

Accommodation: Chelinda Bedrooms

Day 14: Viphya Plateau (B, L, D)
Today’s route continues through Mzuzu to the Viphya Plateau. Your destination is at an altitude of 1,600 m and is therefore malaria-free. Your lodge obtains its energy entirely from solar cells, the water comes from the mountain and vegetables are grown on its own land.

You have the rest of the day at your leisure and you can undertake one of the optional activities such as canoeing, abseiling, squashing or visiting a local community.

Accommodation: Lugawa Forest Lodge

Day 15: Lilongwe Airport (B)

Your last day has arrived. Today you will drive back to Lilongwe for your return flight to the Netherlands
