General information

A beautiful tour through Malawi and Zambia! In Zambia you will visit beautiful Luangwa. This is a perfect place to spot wildlife! Malawi is becoming an increasingly popular destination. Unlike its neighboring countries, apart from elephants, zebras, giraffes and antelope species, you will not find much large game here. But surprisingly, Malawi is a very good beach destination! A large part of the country consists of the huge Lake Malawi, a lake that is approximately 560 km long and no less than 75 km wide. There are beautiful beaches here and a fascinating underwater world. There are around 1,000 different fish species here, making it a good place for both diving and snorkeling.

During this tour you will be introduced to the beautiful, and still relatively unspoilt, country. You see different landscapes, take walks, relax on the beach and make a beautiful kayak safari where you spend the night on an island! All in all a wonderful introduction to Malawi and its residents.

b = breakfast, L = lunch and D = dinner

Day 1: Arrive Lilongwe, Malawi (D)
After you have arrived at the airport of Lilongwe you will be taken to your lodge where you will stay overnight. You will meet your guide and fellow travelers at 6 pm and receive a briefing about the tour. You can ask all your questions here and receive practical information.

Accommodation: Mafumu Lodge

Day 2: Lilongwe, Malawi – Luangwa, Zambia (B, L, D)
A long drive today! After breakfast you leave Lilongwe and travel to Mchinji, the border post between Malawi and Zambia. After all formalities have been completed, you will enter Zambia. It is a 2.5-hour drive from here to the Luangwa Valley. Along the way you will stop for a picnic lunch.

Mid-afternoon you will arrive at your lodge, where you will stay the coming nights.

Accommodation: Marula Lodge, Wildlife Camp of Thornicraft Lodge

Day 3-5: Luangwa (B, L, D)
The coming days are all about game activities. Luangwa is one of the best places in the world to spot wildlife!

Huge numbers of animals come here on the river and the lagoons to quench their thirst. The now well-known and popular walking safaris were created here. And today you can still take fantastic walks through the bush here.
60 different species of game live here and no fewer than 400 different species of birds. Unfortunately you will no longer find rhinos here.

Sadly enough, so many animals have been hunted in the past that they no longer occur in this area.

During your stay here you go on a game drive both in the morning and in the afternoon and you visit a local project or the Tribal Textiles. Optionally you can make walking safaris (not included).

Day 6-8: Luangwa, Zambia – Dzalanyama Forest Reserve, Malawi (B, L, D)
Today you will be driving to Malawi again! After crossing the border again, drive to Dzalanyama Forest Reserve. This reserve is located about 40 km south-west of Lilongwe and consists of a number of steep hills and woodland. The ideal place for walking and bird watching.

You will arrive at your accommodation at the start of the afternoon. After you have checked in you can take a walk.
The walk goes through Mtsongololo Mountain through the forest. Along the way you will certainly spot many birds! During the sunset you return to your accommodation and enjoy dinner.
On day 7 you visit a community. You visit a village just outside the reserve. You can take a walk here, talk to the residents and taste dishes.

The people of Malawi are known for their friendliness and you will certainly experience this. After this visit you will return to your accommodation where you will enjoy a sundowner.Today is free at leisure. This way you can take one of the many walks through the area, but you can also relax. At the beginning of the afternoon you may be accompanied by more fellow travelers.

Accommodation: Forestry House (chalet with private bathroom or shared bathroom)

Day 9-10: Dzalanyama Forest – Game Haven, Malawi (B, L, D)

After breakfast you will drive a beautiful route through Malawi, along the border with Mozambique and through the city of Blantyre, before arriving at your overnight stay for the next two nights. Along the way you make a number of interesting stops! You will visit petroglyphs, viewpoints from where you have a fantastic view of Lake Malawi, and you will visit a market stall along the way.

Game Haven is a serene and beautiful game park (one of the few in Malawi) where you can spot kudu, roan and sable antelopes, zebras and giraffes. But many special birds also live here! After arrival at your lodge you can relax at the swimming pool and enjoy the soothing sound of the waterfall on the background. Enjoy a drink in the bar during the sunset.

On day 10 you set off to explore the area. The highlight of the day is a walking tour to the Satemwa Tea Estate. This beautiful tea plantation produces white, black, gold and flavored tea. After tasting the tea, head to the luxurious Huntingdon House for a fantastic lunch.

Then there is a hike at Thyolo Mountain. You return in the afternoon and have the rest of the day at your leisure.

Accommodation: Game Haven

Day 11-12: Game Haven – Cape Maclear, Lake Malawi (Dag 11: B, L, D, day 12: B, D)
Today you drive to Cape Maclear on Lake Malawi. Along the way you stop at Zomba and visit a market. You then drive through the historic town of Mangochi to Lake Malawi where you will arrive mid-afternoon. Enjoy a sundowner on the beach this afternoon!

Day 12 is at your leisure the entire day. The sporty types can practice one of the non-motorized water sports or go snorkeling and even diving (both optional). Don’t you feel like it? Then you can relax on the beautiful beach or visit a local pub.

Accommodation: Cape Maclear Lodge, Chembe Eagles Nest of Annie’s Lodge

Day 13: Kajak safari (B, L, D)
Today there is an active adventure on the program; you are going to kayak! After breakfast you will be brought to the Kayak Africa Base Camp and a short briefing will be given about the trip. No worries,

you do not need experience. You sail to the island in stable 2-person kayaks. Do you really not want to kayak, that is no problem! Then you will be brought to the island by motorboat.
Once there, a well-deserved lunch follows and the rest of the day you can recover from the trip and explore the island. You spend the night on the island.

Accommodation: Island camp

(in a chalet with private bathroom or in a dome tent with shared bathroom)

Day 14: Cape Maclear, Lake Malawi – Kuti Wildlife Reserve (B, L, D)

You can learn more about the history and culture of Malawi at the Chamare Museum. You will also visit the Carving Center, where you can admire and buy carvings and the library. The museum has an exhibition about the Chewa, Ngoni and Yao cultures. You can also visit a community and admire the arts & crafts center. You then continue to Kuti Wildlife Reserve for the night. You will find different types of landscapes here such as swamps, forests and grassland. This makes this a good habitat for animals such as zebras and impalas. In the afternoon you can choose from a game drive, a walk or a mountain bike tour.

Accommodation: Kuti Wildlife Reserve Chalets

Day 15: Kuti Wildlife Reserve – Lilongwe Airport (B)
