Northern Tuli Game Reserve

The Northern Tuli Game Reserve (abbreviated Notugre), is located in the so-called Tuli Block in the south-eastern tip of Botswana and covers 78,000 hectares. The reserve borders South Africa in the south and Zimbabwe in the east and is part of The Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area. Another name for Northern Tuli Game Reserve is Mashatu Game Reserve or The Land of the Giants. This reserve is easily accessible from South Africa.

Tuli has a landscape that you will not find anywhere else in Botswana and also offers good opportunities for wildlife and birds. You will see a landscape consisting of basalt stones, hills of sandstone, a network of (mostly dry) river beds, green afforestation in wet places, open grasslands, marshy areas and huge Baobab and Mashatu trees. During a game drive you can include lions, hippos, giraffes, hyenas, moose, zebras, impalas, wildebeest, ibex,

spotting gemsboks, bushbabies, leopards, cheetahs and, last but not least, elephants. For birdwatchers, it is also a great area with more than 350 different species including the Kori Bustard, the heaviest flying bird in Africa. Rhinos and buffalo are not in the reserve.

From Tuli Safari Lodge you can make game drives and bush walks with guides who have a very good knowledge of the area or go horseback riding. The lodge itself is beautifully situated on the Limpopo River and is surrounded by beautiful gardens where you can also spot animals and birds. There are a number of places where you can hide to spot animals without disturbing the peace. You can also spend the night in these so-called ‘hides’ for the real adventurous African feeling. For whom this is a bit too much of a good thing, Tuli Safari Lodge has 8 suites, a swimming pool for cooling off and lookout places for watching wildlife and birds.
