The area around the swimming pool offers our guests a pleasant retreat to escape the sun, cool off or simply relax on the sun beds under a thatched roof. The sitting room and dining room at Rhino River Lodge is perched high on the banks of the Msunduze River between the magnificent Sycamore Fig and Fever trees, overlooking the river bed. Early in the morning and late in the afternoon, you can see our warthog family grazing and if you calmly stay very quiet you might see the red diver who comes to check on the lodge from time to time.

The lodge offers hearty home-made meals, served in a relaxed and comfortable environment. Our kitchen specializes in South African cuisine with its specific tastes, dishes and cooking styles. The extremely carefully compiled wine list offers our guests a selection of a number of delicious, affordable wines from South Africa.

A typical day for our guests starts with a morning game drive. This takes around 2½ hours. Coffee and biscuits are served during the game drive, usually in a place with a fantastic view or perhaps close to animals. When we return to the lodge, a tasty brunch is served, after which guests can relax by the pool or wander around the grounds and watch birds. A light lunch is served around 2 am and the afternoon game drive will leave between 3 am and 4 pm depending on the weather and the season. During this game drive we always try to find a place to watch the sun go down with a delicious drink in hand. After having consumed this free drink, we drive back to the lodge in the twilight and we may be lucky to spot some nocturnal animals getting ready for hunting. When you return to the camp you can freshen up before you can sit around the campfire for a drink by the fire. These evenings are part of a magical experience, the scents of the campfire together with the sounds of the African night and the splendor of a clear starry sky. A 3-course meal is served around 7.30 p.m. and can be closed with coffee and tea and often you will return to the campfire for a nightcap.

Rhino River Lodge is an intimate and exclusive game reserve. The lodge is located in the heart of Zululand on the banks of the Umsunduze River, with the Lebombo mountains as a backdrop and is part of the 22,000 ha Zululand Rhino Reserve: the largest private game reserve in KwaZulu Natal (South Africa) Our “Big 5 “reserve offers space for a large amount and diversity of animals and plants.

Zululand Rhino Reserve was initially established as a part of the World Wildlife Fund to expand the black rhino population. A population of this endangered rhino was introduced to the game reserve and has been booming ever since. We are happy at Rhino River Lodge to often meet the black rhino during our game drives. We are very centrally located in Zululand and easily accessible from the Hluhluwe Umfolozi National park and St Lucia Wetland Heritage Site.
