General information

Lieflik is the word Afrikaners use for “beautiful”. You will be introduced to 3 beautiful countries: South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini (formerly Swaziland). Enjoy wildlife, waterfalls, wetlands, relaxing nature and special cultures. Overnight stays at ‘Lieflike’ camping spots make this trip complete!

In Addo Elephant National Park you will not only encounter elephants, but also many other wildlife, such as lions, leopards, various antelope species, zebras and warthogs. You will see hippos and crocodiles in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and you will look for the “Big Five” in the Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve and Kruger Park. The Drakensberg, with various beautiful and challenging hiking routes, and the Panorama route, with the beautiful views, will also leave a great impression.

 

During this tour you are expected to help with setting up the tents, packing the truck and preparing meals. A flexible attitude is required.

Travel schedule -

The travel schedule as described below is based on the program including activity package. If you do not book an activity package, the travel schedule will therefore deviate from the schedule described below. We recommend that you purchase the activity package prior to your trip (when booking) to avoid disappointment on the spot. If you book the activities in advance, you are guaranteed to participate.

This trip will visit the following provinces and countries: Kwazulu Natal, Eastern Cape, Lesotho, Eswatini (previously Swaziland), Mpumalanga, Limpopo and Gauteng.

Day 1: Addo Elephant National Park (D)
You will be picked up around 11 am in Port Elizabeth, meet the guide and your travel group and then the holiday begins! The first stop is the Addo Elephant National Park. This beautiful reserve was created in 1931 to protect the last 11 elephants in this area. Today there are more than 400 elephants, but you can also come across buffaloes, rhinos, giraffes and all kinds of antelopes. The small, special dung beetle threatened with extinction also deserves attention. In the afternoon you take a game drive with the truck through this park in search of the elephants and more. From the truck you have a beautiful view, which is very valuable for the enthusiastic photographers among us!

Day 2: Graaff Reinet (B, L, D)
In the dry and desert-like Great Karoo you will find the historic village of Graaff Reinet, the fourth oldest village in South Africa. Later you can optionally take a sundowner tour to the Valley of Desolation. This beautiful valley gives you a unique view over the fields and the small village and this is an extra nice picture when the sun begins to sink. (N.B. in the South African winter months, this activity is replaced by a sunrise tour to the Valley of Desolation on day 3).

Day 3 en 4: Lesotho – Malealea (2x B, 2x L, 2x D)
A nice route today to the border with Lesotho where you cross the Orange River and drive higher and higher into the mountains. Lesotho bears the appropriate nickname ‘Kingdom in the Sky’, the entire country is more than 1000 meters above sea level. You can imagine that you can enjoy a beautiful view along the way! (day distance ± 500 kilometers and a border crossing).

On day 4 you take a wonderful walk in the fresh mountain air in the morning and visit a local village. You will gain more insight into the daily lives of the people here and you will certainly see the traditional hats and blankets of the Basotho people. Basotho ponies are also a characteristic of Lesotho and you can optionally make a trip by pony with a local guide.

Day 5 en 6: Drakensberg (2x B, 2x L, 2x D)
Today you will enter South Africa again and through the beautiful Golden Gate Highlands Park you will arrive at the Drakensberg, South Africa’s highest mountain range with peaks of 3000 meters and more. You can go hiking and view rock paintings, among other things. If time permits you make a stop along the way at a Vulture Restaurant where with a bit of luck you can see the big vultures feasting (day distance ± 370 kilometers).

On the second day in the Drakensberg you can take a hike in the mountains under the guidance of your guide, where you will visit San rock drawings with a local guide. Everyone is encouraged to go for a walk in nature, the distance and the pace can be adjusted to the wishes of the group. If possible, several groups can also be formed as there is a large variation in walking / hike tours. It is of course also possible to stay at the camp and take a dip in the pool, have a drink at the bar or simply enjoy the beautiful views.

Day 7: Kwa-Zulu Natal Coast – Durban (B, L)
All the way down, leaving mountains and hills behind us, back to the coast. We are on our way to South Africa’s largest port city and popular surfing place Durban. Once created by the Europeans who were shipwrecked here and the Zulu people who saw an existence in dealing with the people who settled here. Along the way there is a stop at Howick waterfall and at the place where Nelson Mandela was arrested.

Today, Durban is a melting pot of nationalities and the associated traditional dishes. Tonight you will probably opt for Indian cuisine here (day distance ± 265 kilometers).

Day 8: Zululand (B, D)
The morning starts quietly and whoever wants can take a beach walk and / or take a dip in the ocean. In the afternoon you leave the city behind and drive along the coast to the part of Kwazulu Natal province known as Zululand. In the evening you take part in a Zulu cultural evening where you learn more about the language and traditions of this people. You can also taste Zulubier made from the Ilala palm.

Day  9: Hluhluwe – Imfolozi game Reserve (B, D)
You have another day full of nature and wildlife ahead. This morning you will drive early to the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve. Thanks to a large-scale conservation project, the park has the largest population of white rhinos in the world. During the game drive you will look for the famous Big Five (elephant, buffalo, rhino, leopard and lion) and other beautiful animals and birds. In the afternoon you return to St. Lucia where you have time for a siesta, to relax or to explore the village yourself. Later you take a boat cruise in the St. Lucia Estuary where hippos are regularly seen. You spend the night at the same accommodation as yesterday.

Day 10: Eswatini – Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary (B, L, D)
Again you leave South Africa, this time for a visit to the kingdom of Eswatini. Today’s destination is the Mlilwane Game Reserve. Mlilwane means ‘Small Fire’ and this reserve is located in the beautiful Ezulwini Valley, also called ‘Valley of Heavens’. Because there are no dangerous predators here, you can explore the area on foot. You can also opt for a visit to Chief’s Village, a game drive or mountain biking through the reserve (day distance ± 335 kilometers and a border crossing).

Day 11: Swaziland – Krugerpark (B, L, D)
After a nice morning walk in nature, it is time to travel further. Before you cross the border, you will visit a craft market. Swaziland is known for the many handmade items and you can probably buy nice souvenirs at the market. You will spend the night on the edge of the Kruger National Park.

Day 12: Panoramaroute (B, L, D)
For those who want to take an optional morning walk, under the supervision of an experienced ranger, the day starts early. If you prefer to start the day more calmly, meet your guide and fellow travelers a little later.
After the walk or after a quiet breakfast, you will leave for the Panorama route for a short drive. In clear weather you can take beautiful pictures at the Three Rondavels, God’s Window and Bourke’s Potholes. The Blyde River Canyon is the third largest canyon in Africa and its cliffs rise some 600 to 800 meters next to the river bed. Water erosion has created particularly shaped rocks and gullies. In the afternoon you return to your camping place.

Day  13: (Greater) Krugerpark (B, D)
Time for a real Krugerpark safari! With an area of almost 20,000 km², this is the largest game reserve in South Africa. Your tour guide will take you all day to see as many of the 336 species of trees, 49 species of fish, 34 species of amphibians, 507 species of birds and 147 different mammals as possible. From the adventure truck with its large windows you have a beautiful view of the landscape. Today will be all about searching for the famous Big Five! In the evening there is the possibility to make an optional Sundowner drive.

Day 14: Johannesburg (B)
Enjoy a game drive this morning before heading back to Johannesburg. You will arrive in Johannesburg at the end of the afternoon. You say goodbye to your guide and traveling party or postpone this until after dinner. There is an optional South African braai (bbq) at the lodge in the evening, optional
