Have you always wanted to see whales up close? If you are in southern South Africa between July and December, you will get the chance. This trip is definitely worth it! From July to December, these fascinating animals come for couples and calves off the Hermanus coast in Walker Bay. Sometimes you can already see the giants from the side, but you can get even closer by boat! A fantastic experience that will stay with you for a long time. Along the way you can also see penguins, sea lions, sharks and many sea birds.

The boat departs approximately 40 km from Hermanus in the town of Kleinbaai. The tour is weather dependent, you will be called a day in advance if the tour will continue. If the weather is unsuitable for sailing, a new date will be offered or you will receive a refund.

Day program -

Every year between July and December, the Southern Right Whales come to this part of the South African coast to mate and calve. An expert team, including a marine biologist, will take you to see whales, seals, sea birds and perhaps also dolphins and sharks from the boat. With a bit of luck you can see the whales jumping out of the water (breaching), a fantastic sight!

You can choose from the following departure times (note: these are guidelines):

  • arrival 7.45 am, departure of the boat 8.30 am
  • arrival 9.45 am, departure of the boat 10.30 am
  • arrival 11.45 am, departure of the boat 12.30 pm
  • arrival 2.15 pm, departure of the boat 3 pm
Departure times depend, among other things, on the weather and you will receive a phone call (in person or to your accommodation) about the exact departure time a day before your trip.

This excursion starts with an informative chat at the Great White House in Kleinbaai, 45 minutes before the departure time (coffee and a muffin are ready for you). Here you will also receive a life jacket and then you will walk to the nearby port. From Kleinbaai harbor you first sail to Pearly Beach where the whales are mostly located. After that you head for ‘Shark Alley’ where hopefully you will see a great white shark if the shark cage dive happens to have taken place.

Then head towards an island off the coast of Gansbaai (Dyer Island) where a colony of African penguins live. Finally you will sail past Geyser Rock where a huge colony of seals can be found. During the boat trip interesting facts are told about the animals you encounter and you can ask questions to the guides and the biologist.

Upon your return, soup with a sandwich will be ready for you at the Great White House. Here you can also take a hot shower if desired. This excursion takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on what you get to see along the way. Always make sure you bring warm clothing as it is cooler on the water than on land. Also think of good protection against the sun, sunglasses and cap or hat!

You can also take this boat trip outside the whale season, so you still have a chance to see all the other animals and birds mentioned above. Outside the whale season this boat trip is called ‘Eco Tour’, ask us for the price for this tour.

The port where the boat departs is about a half-hour drive from Hermanus in Kleinbaai, from Cape Town it is about a 2-hour drive.
