Breathtaking Sani Pass tour and Cultural excursion in Lesotho

General information
For both South Africans and tourists, this is a trip that is on the wish list of many: the Sani Pass to Lesotho. This breathtakingly beautiful mountain pass is only passable with a good 4×4 and takes you to the top of the mountain pass at a whopping 2874 meters above sea level.
Along the way there is attention for plants, birds and animals in the area and of course an occasional stop to enjoy the view. Once at the top you can have lunch at the highest situated pub in Africa. Then a visit to a Basotho village is on the program where you can learn more about Lesotho and its residents. You depart from Underberg at the foot of the southern Drakensberg Kwazulu Natal.

Sani Pass Tours has been around since 1955 and was founded by David Alexander who wanted to make the Sani Pass accessible with 4WD vehicles so that a larger audience could enjoy the fantastic views en route and at the top. The Sani Pass Tours team has experienced guides who go daily to the Sani Pass and know the area well. They use excellently maintained vehicles with as much comfort as possible for the clients, as it is sometimes a very bumpy path that takes you to the top. You travel in small groups so that a lot of personal attention can be given. You will learn more about the history of this mountain pass, the birds, animals and plants that you can encounter here and the Basotho people.

Day program -
You are expected at 9:00 am at the Sani Pass Tours office at the Trout Walk Center in Underberg (in the south-east of Kwazulu Natal province at the foot of the southern Drakensberg). If you are staying 5 km from the departure point or on the route from the departure point to Sani Pass, you can be picked up for free. For a transfer from another location, ask us for the price.

You will leave around 9:30 am for the 2.5 hour trip to the top at 2874 meters above sea level. Along the way you will of course stop at beautiful lookout points and at the border posts of South Africa and the kingdom of Lesotho (don’t forget your passport!)

When the top is reached, it’s time to have lunch at Africa’s highest pub: The Sani Top Chalet. Lunch is for your own account and the costs are around R150 per person.

After lunch you will be taken to the Basotho village by the experienced guide. You get to know the people of the Basotho tribe and the guide will also tell you more about Lesotho. You can taste traditional beer and home-made bread on request. After this cultural experience you will descend to Underberg where you will arrive between 16:00 and 16:30 depending on the wildlife you encounter along the way.

Please note: bring your passport and clothing for all weather conditions. Even though it is nice and warm at the foot of the mountain, it can cool down considerably at the top. There may be snow in the winter months. Children under 2 years of age can join for free and have to sit on their parents’ lap. Children from 2 to 15 years old receive a discount and from 15 years the price for adults is charged. Please note: are you traveling with children under the age of 18? Take the birth certificate with you! Read more about border crossings here.

You can book this excursion in combination with other components from our total travel offer.
